UPDATE: In case you missed last week’s dispatch. Here it is bright and early just for you.
“One good day does not mean you can coast tomorrow. You never have it fully licked. Making good choices is an endless process. Many areas of life that we value most—our relationships, our fitness, our craft—require a continual commitment.” - James Clear
Hello Familia - Welcome to vol. 19 of Move Fast, Think Slow. If you missed last week’s dispatch here it is. MF/TS covered MLK Jr. birthday, internet & cultural prediction from Marshall McLuhan (circa 1977), discipline & habits, and more.
This week’s dispatch is focused on the meditative. The art of slow thinking and mindful perspective. If you are new here, read more about MF/TS and subscribe below.
Stoic Meditation of the week 🙏 🤔
The colors you take on: This is a constant reminder from Ryan Holiday of Daily Stoic. And in light of this week’s meditation, this quote brings up an important practice.
The Sacred Utterance: Two things here that I love. One, remember the power nature gave you. You have the power to shape your own thoughts. You are in command. And I don’t know about you but I had no idea that “Mantra” means “sacred utterance.” How wonderful is that?
The Practice: To bring it back to “your soul takes on the color of your thoughts,” a Mantra and daily practice of it might change the color of your soul for the better. Learn more about a Mantra practice here. I myself have used many different versions in my own life. Typically I have focused on gratitude, confidence, and setting a good vibration for myself because after all, self-love is the best love (science proves it). Well, maybe not “the best” but it’s pretty damn important. #Namste.
Rick Rubin 🧘 🎨 🎧
Rick Rubin is the GOAT. Many of the songs, artists, and music groups I admire the most that have an original flavor that has stood the test of time has Rick’s fingerprints all over them. The original hip-hop of the 80s that jump-started an international movement (Run-DMC, Public Enemy, LL Cool J) the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s best album, the Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, and many more. He is a mega music producer but also a sage guru. He’s having a PR moment with a new book and a recent 60 minutes interview with Anderson Cooper. Rick has these wonderful little pearls of wisdom that drops onto the feed every now and then.
Takeaways: Go with the flow. Be honest about yourself and where you need to focus. Be honest about the process. Lose your ego. Live to see another day. He has more based on his life experience of being a mega producer working with the best artist of our time making some of the best music ever created.
On a personal note: I find that his points of view not only influence my creative life, but my professional one as well. I believe we are constantly in pursuit of becoming and are always creating. Whether we know it or not. #PraisebeRickRubin
